LifeBed Brings Nurse to Patient in Distress
James Johanson (pseudonym) returned to his hospital bed after having chest tube inserted, and was placed on a Hoana Lifebed™ patient vigilance system for monitoring. That evening, James was reaching for clothes, putting pressure at the newly placed chest tube, inciting fear and pain. The fear and pain caused James’ heart rate to rise, which led to a Hoana Lifebed alert, and brought a nurse to the bedside. The nurse assessed that James could barely speak and that he was “splinting” his ribs; his breathing was labored. Her assessment was that James’ chest tube was out of place. Upon readjusting the chest tube, James’ heart rate gradually returned to normal.
The Hoana LifeBed patient vigilance system enabled the nurse to be aware of James’ situation before it became a severe condition. James indicated that he was really impressed with the system, and that it let him feel safe knowing that he was being monitored all the time.
